Hello: We want to come to the Crimea in September. Does anyone know about travel to the Crimea from Istanbul,.Turkey?? Is Yalta a nice place to visit and to stay to learn about history and enjoy the scenery? Can you tell us a nice place to stay in Yalta...but not too expensive? What is special about Sevastopol? How do you get to Yalta from Sevastopol?thank you Gloria USA South Carolina |

Hey Gloria! From Turkey you can take a boat that will take you to Crimea, Sevastopol or Yalta most Likly. Just about any place you will decide to stay at will turn out to be alot less expensive than what yoy are used to in US. If you stay in Yalta, I suggest "Intourist" Hotel, which is meant especially for tourists from overseas, so they shoul be profficient in english and so on. Sevastopol is 2 hour drive away, beautiful road, ot top of mountain, beats I-95!! :] Yalta is a vary small town, I am talking about being able to cross the main area in leass than 40 minutes, but there many places to go but the main boardwalk: famous yalta winery for instance... In other words any place in Crimea is a good place to be at in summer, I grew up in sevastopol, so I am all about that town, but I like to go to yalta once in a while as well. SC, huh? I have some intense memories about that state... spent 3 months on Parris Island,... tell you what: heat in SC in the middle of july is no joke... Good luck to you! Serge, NY.

Hello. I am from Minneapolis. I have been to Crimea several times. I always stay at Sevastopol but I always spend some time in Yalta also. I stay at Hotel Sevastopol. It is a historic hotel in the center of the city and has cable television and hot showers, so it works for me. Please be sure to take the cable car to the top of the Crimean mountains. There are people at the top selling hot food and wine. It's great! Crimea is very lively and exciting from June through August. In September there will not be as much activity, but I am sure you will still enjoy it very much. I will be in Sevastopol on July 28th!!!

If you fly to Crimea. You will arrive in Simferopol. You can get a taxi to take you to Sevastopol for I think $40 or $50. It is a 1 hour drive. You can also get a taxi to drive you from Sevastopol to Yalta for $30 or $40. My travel agent is with ITS Tours & Travel and could help make taxi and hotel arrangements for you if you need some help. I have always been very happy with her service. One other thing. It is difficult to find people that speak good Engilsh in Crimea, so it helps a lot to know some common Russian words.

Mark, if you pay 50 bucks for cab from simferopol to sevastopol, amd 40 from sevastopl to yalta, you are being raped, no ky, nothing, straight up your.... seriously, it shouldn't ecceed 20, maximium, i repeat maximum 30 greens, or perhaps your are advertising your agent here, then, by all means. :] Me personally, I would get a cab for 10-15&.easy.

And I feel like the criminal for paying such a low price. I guess the taxi driver is happy and I am happy too. The $40 to go to Yalta was for a taxi driver to take us to Yalta for the day and then take us back to Sevastopol at the end of the day. In Minneapolis, it costs $30 just to get a 10 mile ride from my home to the Airport.Anyway, Seryoga, it is good to know that I can ask for a lower price next time. Thanks!

Yeah, I know, in NY you would have to bust out 50-60 bones to go to JFK as well, but in Ukraine it's not like that, majority of people don't make more than 30-40 dollars a month, so you paying for a ride that much is like giving him a whole salary all at once in one day. But if he was there all day waiting for you, that's a different story.

Thanks Seryoga for the comments about travel to the Crimea. I lost this bulletin board and just now found it again....sorry. Yes, we will stay at the Yalta hotel. We will also stay 2 nights in Sevastopol but cannot decide if we should stay at the Sevastopol Hotel or the Yard. I am just now trying to decide which hotel to get reserved.....and we leave in 2 weeks. WE can't wait.gloria South Carolina

I hope you stayed at the Sevastopol Hotel. The Yard is a better hotel, but it is so far away from everything. |
