Villagers who found the 200-litre kegs quickly summoned friends and soon the entire adult population was using everything from shopping carts to tractors to haul the 96 per cent proof liquid home.
According to Ukrainian newspapers, police were only alerted late in the evening. It took more than 24 hours to persuade villagers to hand over what remained of the kegs.
A doctor called in to check the health of villagers said a few were still celebrating several days after the kegs washed up. He said many Ukrainians were hardened drinkers and it was common in rural areas for people to swig raw spirits.--
